Srinagar, Aug 6: Kashmir’s chief preacher Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the abrogation of Article 370 was a painful reminder of how the Centre imposed its unilateral decision on Jammu and Kashmir and disempowered people by altering the region’s constitutional status.
Mirwaiz was commenting on the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 35A and Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
Mirwaiz said he hoped that the Centre would honour the spirit of “insaniyat (humanity) and jamhooriyat (democracy), and engage with the people of J&K with justice, sincerity and respect”.
“August 5 is a painful reminder of the day when a decision was imposed upon J&K by the Government of India, reneging on its own constitutional commitments made to the people of Jammu & Kashmir and unilaterally altering its structure and status, further disempowering a people awaiting conflict resolution,” Mirwaiz said in a post on X.
“This multi-pronged assault on the identity, character and rights of the people of J&K has left yet another deep wound on our body politic. Yet, the courage and resilience of the people of this land in safeguarding it and standing up for their rights has always been exemplary,” he said. ( PTI )
