Kashmiri literature, an integral part of the Valley’s linguistic and cultural identity, faces neglect in the current education system. Its absence at the higher secondary (10+2) level has created a significant gap that hinders students from pursuing it in higher education. Among the 400+ higher secondary schools in Kashmir, only 16+ schools offer Kashmiri literature, leaving most students unexposed to this subject during their formative years. This lack of foundational exposure translates into low enrollment rates in colleges offering Kashmiri literature, posing a serious threat to the survival of the subject.

While the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes the importance of regional languages and literature, its implementation in Kashmir has been slow. This neglect not only contravenes the NEP’s vision but also results in a disconnect between school-level education and higher education, leading to a steady decline in interest and academic engagement with Kashmiri literature.

                          Major challenges

1. Lack of Foundation at the 10+2 Level: The absence of Kashmiri literature in most higher secondary schools denies students the opportunity to build a basic understanding of the subject. Without this exposure, students are left unprepared to take it up in college, creating a disjointed academic pathway.

2. Low Enrollment in Colleges: Colleges that offer Kashmiri literature face low enrollment rates because students entering college often lack the familiarity and confidence to study the subject. This gap discourages students from pursuing Kashmiri literature academically and limits the pool of scholars in the field.

3. Regional Disparities: Even in regions where Kashmiri is widely spoken, schools fail to offer Kashmiri literature as part of their curriculum. This deprives students of the opportunity to connect their linguistic heritage with academic study, further eroding interest in the subject.

The NEP 2020 and Its Unrealized Vision

The NEP 2020 places a strong emphasis on promoting regional languages and literature to preserve cultural identity and foster intellectual growth. It advocates for the inclusion of mother tongues and regional languages in school education, particularly at foundational levels, to enhance learning outcomes.

By introducing Kashmiri literature at the 10+2 level, the NEP’s vision could be actualized, allowing students to engage with their linguistic heritage in a structured academic environment. However, the lack of implementation of these recommendations in Kashmir undermines the policy’s goals and leaves Kashmiri literature marginalized in the educational framework

Impact of the Gap on Students and the Subject

Lost Opportunities for Academic Growth: The absence of Kashmiri literature in higher secondary schools  and its limited presence in colleges restrict students from exploring the subject academically. This deprives them of potential career opportunities in teaching, research, and cultural studies, which are critical for the subject’s sustainability.

Reluctance while choosing subject: Without exposure to Kashmiri literature in their school years, students are unlikely to choose it as a subject in college. This has led to a consistent decline in enrollment, reducing the number of scholars and researchers in the field.

Cultural and Linguistic Disconnect: The lack of Kashmiri literature in the curriculum alienates students from their linguistic and cultural heritage. This disconnect diminishes their ability to appreciate and preserve the rich literary tradition of Kashmir.

The Way Forward: Bridging the Gap

To address these challenges, it is crucial to focus on targeted interventions that align with the NEP’s vision:

1.Introducing Kashmiri Literature at the 10+2 Level: Prioritize the inclusion of Kashmiri literature in higher secondary schools located in Kashmiri-speaking regions. Develop age-appropriate syllabi and teaching materials that make the subject accessible and engaging for students.

2. Teacher Recruitment and Training: Recruit qualified educators to teach Kashmiri literature at the school level. Provide training to existing teachers to enhance their capacity to deliver engaging lessons and spark interest among students.

3. Aligning School and College Curricula: Create a seamless academic pathway by aligning the 10+2 curriculum with college-level courses. This will help students transition smoothly into higher education

4. Awareness and Engagement: Organize workshops, literary competitions, and cultural events to generate interest in Kashmiri literature among students. Involve local communities and stakeholders in promoting the subject as a vital part of the region’s identity.

Conclusion

The absence of Kashmiri literature at the 10+2 level is a systemic issue with far-reaching implications for students, educators, and the broader cultural landscape of Kashmir. By failing to introduce the subject at this critical stage, the education system creates a gap that prevents students from pursuing Kashmiri literature in college and beyond.

The NEP 2020 offers a roadmap for addressing this issue by emphasizing the importance of regional languages and literature in education. However, immediate action is needed to implement these recommendations in Kashmir. Introducing Kashmiri literature in higher secondary schools, particularly in Kashmiri-speaking regions, is a crucial step toward bridging the gap and reviving interest in the subject.

Without such measures, the decline in interest and enrollment in Kashmiri literature will continue, jeopardizing the future of this vital academic and cultural field. Now is the time to act and ensure that Kashmiri literature finds its rightful place in the education system, fostering a new generation of scholars and preserving this rich heritage for years to come.
