SRINAGAR, JULY 19 : Jammu and Kashmir Congress President Tariq Hameed Karra on Saturday accused the administration of imposing curbs on a peaceful protest march by the party, calling it an “undemocratic act” and a reflection of “administrative frustration.”
Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters in Srinagar, Karra said that Congress workers from various parts of the Valley were stopped en route and not allowed to enter the city. The party had planned to submit a memorandum to the Divisional Commissioner, reiterating its long-standing demand for the restoration of J&K’s statehood.
“We had gathered peacefully to voice a democratic demand, yet we were prevented from stepping outside and restricted to the premises of our own headquarters,” Karra said. “Such suppression of political activity is deeply disturbing in a democratic society.”
He further stated that the Congress will intensify its campaign in the coming days, culminating in a planned protest march to Delhi on July 21, where senior Congress leaders will raise the demand for full statehood restoration more forcefully.
Karra also expressed gratitude to AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi for standing firmly with the people of Jammu and Kashmir and writing to the Prime Minister in support of the statehood demand.
