Over 110 Entrepreneurs Participate in MSME Design Drive Across Valley

Srinagar, Feb 20: Emphasising the transformative power of innovation, the Director of National Institute of Technology Srinagar (NIT Srinagar) said that design-led innovation is crucial for accelerating Kashmir’s economic growth and strengthening the competitiveness of local industries.

The remarks were made during an MSME Design Awareness Programme organised by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at NIT Srinagar, which witnessed participation from over 110 entrepreneurs, startup founders, artisans, and MSME stakeholders from across the Kashmir region.

The programme, supported by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises under its MSME Design Scheme, aimed to sensitise entrepreneurs about the importance of product design, innovation, branding, and market positioning.

Addressing the participants, Director Binod Kumar Kanaujia stressed that design should not be seen merely as aesthetics but as a strategic tool to enhance product functionality, quality, and global appeal. He said that adopting structured design processes can significantly improve the value of traditional Kashmiri products, enabling them to compete in national and international markets.

Experts at the programme highlighted the importance of academia-industry collaboration, mentoring support, and systematic product development strategies. Special focus was laid on integrating modern design techniques with traditional crafts, agri-based products, and emerging startup ventures in the region.

Entrepreneurs attending the session discussed challenges such as market access, branding gaps, and scaling up production, while expressing optimism that structured design intervention could open new avenues for business expansion and employment generation in Jammu and Kashmir.

The initiative marks a significant step towards fostering a culture of innovation and strengthening the MSME ecosystem in the Valley, positioning design as a catalyst for sustainable economic development.
