Today on 28th of October, 2023, GDC Allochi Bagh Srinagar organized one day Education tour to Dachigam National Park and its adjoining historical places. A total of 50- students with faculty members/staff lead by the College Principal, Prof (Dr) Mohd Amin Malik were part of this tour. The aim of the program was to acquaint students about the importance of biodiversity, flora-fauna and its importance in the present times. This protected area on the outskirts of Srinagar is home to the last viable population of the threatened stag species called “ Hangul”. While reaching at Dachigam National Park, the Principal of the college Dr Malik gave a brief perspective about the sanctuary, its geographical location and the species present in it. He said that it is a unique opportunity for us to connect with the nature, learn about the incredible biodiversity that surrounds us and appreciate the importance of conserving our natural world. The students and the staff trekked down all along roads, mountain sides, lanes, saw alpine pastures, meadows, waterfalls, and scrub vegetation and were filled with excitement and energy. They interacted with the experts to learn more about the wildlife and habitation. The faculty and the students watched two wild life Documentaries at the Animal Interpretation Center depicting the environment of the place. A brief lecture was also delivered by a concerned guide there, elaborating the historical, botanical and zoological importance Vis-a-Vis gave a brief introduction about the flora and fauna of the location. The students of Botany collected various specimens and held discussions on flora and fauna with the experts. The students visited the Trout Fish Farm (Laribal) and a short lecture was delivered by a concerned officer about the rearing, feeding and marketing of the fish. Later, the students paid a visit to the Oak patch and observed the ecosystem. Students also visited the site where some animals like Himalayan Brown Bear, Asiatic Black Bear and leopards were kept in captivity. After the culmination of the subject tour, the staff and the students visited an Ancient Stupa Monastery Harwan, an ancient Buddhist settlement and the site of fourth Buddhist council held during the reign of Kanishka. The monument has been declared to be of national importance under the ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains act. A cleanliness drive was carried by the NSS volunteers, Eco club members and the students of the college at the site. The Whole event was coordinated by the College Debate and Seminar Committee, NSS wing of the College.
