Iran’s state television has officially confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, announcing his passing early Sunday and showing archival footage with a black mourning banner. Iran also declared a 40-day period of national mourning and several days of public holidays. Khamenei, 86, had been the country’s supreme leader since 1989, presiding over its political, military and religious institutions for more than three decades.
