Nov 4,Srinagar: Moulvi Omar Farooq claimed he was stopped by police early this morning from leaving his residence to offer condolences at his ancestral home, Mirwaiz Manzil in Rajouri Kadal, where people had gathered to pay their respects following the passing of Mirwaiz Mohammad Ahmad. According to Farooq, the authorities had locked the Jama Masjid, and the Auqaf was warned with an FIR threat should they proceed with funeral prayers in absentia (gaibana namaz-e-janaza) for the deceased at the mosque.

In a public statement, Farooq questioned the situation in what he referred to as “Naya Kashmir,” saying, “Is it unlawful to condole a death and offer funeral prayers?” and appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for clarification.
