Srinagar, Jan 15 : The nation on Thursday observed Indian Army Day with pride and solemnity, commemorating the historic appointment of General (later Field Marshal) K.M. Cariappa, OBE, as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief on January 15, 1949.

This day stands as a tribute to the unparalleled valour, sacrifice, discipline, and professionalism of the Indian Army’s personnel, who remain resolute in their duty to uphold the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Army Day reaffirms the force’s enduring legacy and its unwavering commitment, embodied in its motto, “Service Before Self.” From the Himalayan glaciers to the Thar Desert, and across dense forests and challenging frontiers, the Indian Army serves as the nation’s steadfast shield, demonstrating exceptional courage and resilience.

In Kashmir, commemorative events were held at several locations, including Srinagar, Sharifabad, Uri, and Tangdhar. Senior military officials presided over wreath-laying ceremonies. Veterans were honoured in special felicitation events, recognising their lifetime of service and contributions. These observances underscore the Army’s deep-rooted traditions and the enduring bond between serving soldiers, veterans, and the citizenry.

On this significant occasion, the nation pays profound homage to the bravery and dedication of its serving personnel, veterans, and their families. Their collective sacrifices and steadfast support remain a timeless source of inspiration, fostering national pride and patriotism.
