Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the collective efforts of Sheikhgund village in Anantnag district of south Kashmir for coming together to eliminate social evils such as drugs, tobacco and alcoholism.
Speaking during his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister highlighted the village as an example of how community participation and family strength can help overcome serious social challenges.
“When the strength of family and society combines, we can overcome even the most insurmountable challenges. I’ve learned about Sheikhgund village in Anantnag,” the Prime Minister said, according to details shared during the broadcast.
PM Modi said that Sheikhgund was witnessing a sharp rise in problems related to drugs, tobacco, cigarettes and alcohol, which caused deep concern among the residents. He made special mention of Mir Jafar, a native of the village, who took the initiative to address the growing menace.
“Seeing all this, Mir Jafar Ji became so distressed that he resolved to address this problem. He united everyone in the village, from the youth to the elders,” the Prime Minister said.
“The impact of his initiative was such that shops there stopped selling tobacco products. This effort also increased public awareness about the dangers of drugs”, he said.
