Srinagar, Dec 30 : Cold conditions persisted across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Tuesday, with several places in the Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region recording sub-zero temperatures, even as the Meteorological Department forecast snowfall in parts of the region from today evening.

In the Kashmir region, Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.2 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg settled at minus 1.6 degrees Celsius.

Pulwama also experienced sub-zero conditions at minus 1.1 degrees Celsius. Srinagar recorded a low of 1.0 degrees Celsius, while the city’s airport registered 0.8 degrees Celsius.

Other parts of the Valley reported near-freezing temperatures, with Anantnag and Shopian recording 0.8 degrees Celsius and 0.2 degrees Celsius respectively. Kupwara registered a minimum of 2.0 degrees Celsius, while Baramulla recorded 2.1 degrees Celsius. Sonamarg settled at 0.4 degrees Celsius, officials said.

In the Jammu region, minimum temperatures remained higher compared to Kashmir. Jammu city recorded a low of 8.6 degrees Celsius, while Katra registered 9.8 degrees Celsius.

Banihal recorded 5.0 degrees Celsius, Batote 7.7 degrees Celsius, and Bhaderwah 3.8 degrees Celsius.

Kishtwar was the coldest place in the region, recording a minimum of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius.

In the Ladakh region, intense cold conditions persisted. Leh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius, while Kargil settled at minus 7.9 degrees Celsius. Nubra Valley recorded a low of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius

The Meteorological Department forecast light rain and snowfall at many places across Jammu and Kashmir from Tuesday evening, with precipitation likely to intensify on December 31 and January 1.

Officials said light rain and snow are expected at most places during this period, while some higher reaches of north and central Kashmir may receive moderate snowfall.

Weather conditions are likely to improve from the afternoon of January 1, with no significant weather activity expected across the Union Territory till January 12, they added.(KNS).
