Department of Tourism and Ecotourism Society of Kashmir, organized a cleanliness drive at Thajwas Glacier in Sonmarg on saturday. The initiative aimed to promote responsible tourism and saw enthusiastic participation from local stakeholders and volunteers from Kashmir University.
CEO, Sonamarg Development Authority, Farooq Ahmad Baba, emphasized the importance of environmental awareness. “It’s very important that we make people aware of our environment. SDA is committed to educating the public and keeping our tourist destinations neat and clean,” he said.
Sameer Baktoo, President Ecotourism Society of Kashmir, highlighted the significance of such initiatives for responsible tourism. “Kashmir’s unparalleled natural beauty is the cornerstone of its tourism industry. Any harm to our environment would severely impact tourism and the livelihoods of many who depend on it,” Baktoo stated. He urged attendees to commit to sustainable practices, stressing the long-term impact on Kashmir’s tourism landscape.
The drive brought together volunteers and local stakeholders in a unified effort to protect the region’s natural resources. Participants learned about pollution’s impact and the importance of conservation.
Baktoo extended gratitude to the Director of Tourism, Kashmir, and the district administration of Ganderbal for their support. He also acknowledged the contributions of the Chief Executive Officer of the Sonamarg Development Authority and the support from the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation, the Forest Department Sonmarg, the Wildlife Department Sonmarg, local stakeholders, and the management of Hotel Village Walk.
It is pertain to mention that this collaborative effort highlighted the shared responsibility of preserving Kashmir’s natural heritage. The Department of Tourism and the Ecotourism Society of Kashmir reiterated their commitment to continuing such initiatives, aiming for a lasting positive impact on the environment and the tourism sector.
