Srinagar, June 20 : While addressing media persons at the Traffic NHW Headquarters in Ramban, DIG Traffic Jammu Zone, Dr. Mohd Haseeb Mughal IPS, shared updates on the ongoing drive against Motor Vehicle Act violations. Since January 1, 2024, until May 31, 2024, the Traffic Police National Highway, under the supervision of IGP Traffic J&K, has booked 38,350 traffic violators and imposed fines amounting to Rs 38,523,950 for breaching traffic rules.
During this period, 553 vehicles were seized. To deter traffic rule violations and reduce road accidents, 29 FIRs were lodged for overloading in public service vehicles (PSVs): 21 in Districts Doda & Kishtwar, 5 in District Udhampur, and 3 in District Ramban.
Strict actions have been taken against overloading in both goods and PSVs. Traffic Police NHW booked 1,418 vehicles for overloading in goods vehicles and 10,468 traffic violators for overloading in PSVs. To maintain lane discipline on the National Highway, Traffic Police NHW Ramban booked 800 violators for overtaking/wrong lane driving and 326 violators for dangerous driving/red light jumping.
To raise public awareness about traffic rules, Traffic Police NHW Ramban conducted 145 traffic awareness programs across the districts of Ramban, Udhampur, Reasi, Doda, and Kishtwar, and on three national highways (NH-44, NH-144, and NH-244). These programs educated drivers, students, commuters, transport unions, and agents about their roles, duties, and rights.
As a corrective measure, Traffic Police NHW Ramban recommended 44 cases for suspension/cancellation of driving licenses (DL), registration certificates (RC), and route permits (RP): 10 DL cases, 33 RCs, and 1 RP. Additionally, 153 vehicles were recommended for blacklisting.
DIG Traffic Jammu Zone emphasized the regulation of traffic on the three national highways, particularly NH-44 from Nashiri to Banihal, which poses significant challenges due to ongoing construction and frequent landslides/shooting stones. Despite these challenges, around 1,376,297 vehicles (468,179 heavy motor vehicles and 908,118 light motor vehicles) crossed the Chenani-Nashiri tunnel by May 2024.
Traffic Police NHW requests commuters to follow traffic advisories to minimize inconvenience. The officer conveyed that stringent action against Motor Vehicle Act violators will continue, with efforts aimed at reducing road accidents, saving lives, instilling traffic discipline, and promoting mutual respect among road users.
In his appeal to the general public, the officer highlighted the importance of good road etiquette as part of our cultural heritage and urged all stakeholders to exhibit responsible behavior on the roads.
