Srinagar, July 18, 2025 – In a key development for the advancement of adventure and competitive water sports in Jammu & Kashmir, a high-level delegation of national medal-winning athletes, association officials, and water sports stakeholders today met the Hon’ble Sports Minister of J&K, Shri Satish Sharma Ji. The meeting marked a crucial step toward institutional support and recognition for water-based disciplines such as rowing, sculling, kayaking, and canoeing in the Union Territory.
Led by Dr. Burhan Bazaz, President of the J&K Rowing and Sculling Association, the delegation included prominent figures like Dr. Imran Nazir, Mr. Hussain Khan, Mr. Latif Ahmad, and others. The gathering was underscored by a shared vision to elevate J&K as a national and international hub for water sports, leveraging the region’s rich aquatic geography.
The athletes and officials highlighted the state’s consistent performance at national championships, achieved despite limited infrastructure and financial support. They credited much of this success to the tireless mentorship of Ms. Bilquis Mir, an internationally acclaimed water sports athlete whose dedication has inspired a generation.
The delegation emphasized the untapped potential of natural water bodies like Dal Lake, Wular Lake, Manasbal Lake, Ranjit Sagar, and Mansar Lake, which could host high-level competitions, training camps, and festivals. These events, they argued, would not only enhance sports culture but also stimulate eco-tourism, local employment, and youth engagement.
Concerns were also raised regarding delays in facility access, lack of grassroots funding, and limited departmental support. In response, Shri Satish Sharma Ji gave an attentive hearing and assured time-bound redressal of all genuine issues. He expressed admiration for the athletes’ achievements and announced a cash award of ₹25,000 for recent national medal winners, as a token of recognition and encouragement.
One of the young athletes, Mr. Zahid, shared: “I am deeply inspired by Ms. Bilquis Mir. Her guidance has shaped my dream of becoming a top-tier athlete.”
Minister Sharma urged associations to submit detailed proposals for upcoming events, training plans, and infrastructural upgrades, reiterating the Ministry’s commitment to developing J&K into a premier water sports destination.
The meeting concluded on a hopeful note, with all stakeholders committed to transforming water sports in J&K—fostering excellence, equity, and global recognition for the region’s talent and natural assets.
