Srinagar, Nov 1 (Kashmir Pen): In a significant step towards sustainable urban transport, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to develop the Srinagar Water Metro, inspired by the successful Kochi Water Metro model.
The ambitious project aims to connect major points along Dal Lake and the Jhelum River, offering an eco-friendly, efficient alternative to road transport and easing traffic congestion in Srinagar city.
Officials said the Water Metro will enhance connectivity between key locations, including tourist and heritage zones, while also promoting environmentally responsible mobility. Modern electric and solar-powered boats are expected to be deployed, ensuring minimal impact on the lake ecosystem.
A senior official from the Transport Department said, “The Water Metro will not only improve mobility but also boost tourism and livelihood opportunities for the local population.”
A similar initiative is also being planned for Jammu region, with Akhnoor and Reasi identified as potential sites for development under the project’s second phase.
The move reflects the government’s focus on green infrastructure and smart mobility, aiming to integrate water transport into the broader public transport system of the Union Territory.
