Meet Ulfat Mushtaq First Kashmiri Cyclist to Reach National Competitions Srinagar, Jan 13: Across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, young women are challenging old norms by excelling in a variety of sports. They are achieving success on tracks and fields, realizing their potential, and inspiring future generations as strong new role models. Among these athletes is Ulfat Mushtaq, a resident of North Kashmir’s Rafiabad, who has made history by becoming Kashmir’s first female cyclist to reach the national stage—a milestone for the Kashmir valley. Speaking with media representatives, Ulfat said, “I am a female cyclist from Kashmir. I have participated in numerous races so far, with significant achievements.” She detailed her early successes in local circuits, including a 75-kilometre race from Kaman Post to Baramulla. Her performance in another 79-kilometre race from Bandipora to Srinagar earned her an award from Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. The turning point in her journey came when she participated in the 29th National Championship in Odisha. “I was selected for the National Games of India, becoming Kashmir’s first female cyclist to do so,” Ulfat said. “My efforts have grown. I am striving to take Jammu and Kashmir to greater heights through my cycling,” she stated. This year, she competed in the 30th National Championship in Sambalpur, Odisha. She is currently in Kurukshetra, Haryana, participating in the Khelo India Asmita Women’s League. “My performance here has been amazing and has helped me secure a position,” she added with confidence. Ulfat said, “I am so happy my performance is improving day by day. The day is not far when I will fulfil the dream of representing Kashmir at the international level.” She added, “It is truly great to see my fellow colleagues achieving and shining daily. We belong to a place where such facilities and environments are hardly available, but it is passion and hard work that have kept us moving forward. We have always tried to represent Kashmir with beautiful colours.” “Today is indeed a proud moment,” she said, “as we girls have become the first such team from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir not only to participate in a national-level event but also to secure positions.” Ulfat said, “We daughters are not lagging behind in any way. We are ready to face every challenge and represent our positive Kashmir at any level.” She added, “I appeal to all girls to follow your passion and your dreams. Only you can make it happen. Do not delay in fulfilling your aspirations.”
