Srinagar, Dec 31: Residents of Kalashpora, Babadem Link Road in Srinagar have raised serious concerns over the Srinagar Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) alleged negligence in failing to remove construction debris left behind after cement/concrete slab work carried out nearly two-and-a-half months ago.
According to a formal grievance submitted to the Commissioner, SMC, municipal officials had undertaken slab-laying work in the lane adjoining Masjid Sheikh Hamza, Kalashpora. However, after completion of the work, large quantities of stones, rubble, broken concrete and waste material were reportedly dumped just opposite the Masjid Shareef and have remained unattended since then.
Locals allege that the prolonged presence of debris has caused severe inconvenience and posed serious safety hazards, especially during the harsh winter season. Due to rain, snowfall and slush, the area has turned muddy and slippery, increasing the risk of accidents. Elderly residents and regular worshippers have expressed fear and difficulty in accessing the mosque for daily prayers.
Terming the situation as “deeply unfortunate,” the residents said that instead of improving civic amenities, the locality has effectively been turned into an unauthorised dumping site. They described the delay as a gross violation of civic responsibility, sanitation norms and public safety standards, particularly in a religious and densely populated residential area.
In the complaint, the residents have demanded immediate removal of the dumped debris, restoration of the lane to a clean and walkable condition, and fixing responsibility to ensure such negligence is not repeated in future municipal works.
The grievance has been submitted by Advocate Munir Iqbal, a resident of the area, on behalf of the locality members of Kalashpora, Babadem, through their office bearers including Ali Mohammad Bhat (President), Ahmad Ali Kalla (Treasurer) and Mohammad Yaqoob Bhat (Vice President).
The matter has also been brought to the notice of the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, media organisations and other concerned authorities, with residents hoping for swift intervention to prevent any untoward incident and to provide much-needed relief to the locality | Kashmir Pen
