SRINAGAR 25 May : The first Cherry Special Parcel Van of the season carrying horticultural produce from Jammu and Kashmir was dispatched to Mumbai on Monday, marking a significant step in the faster transportation of perishable goods to major markets across India.
Officials said around 12 tonnes of cherries, comprising approximately 966 boxes, were loaded onto the special parcel van bound for Bandra Terminus. The consignment is expected to reach Mumbai in about 33 hours.
The initiative aims to ensure swift movement of Jammu and Kashmir’s seasonal horticultural produce, particularly cherries, to maintain freshness and market quality during transit.
Railway authorities said special arrangements have been made to handle the highly perishable fruit. The fast-track service is expected to help farmers and traders access distant markets in shorter timeframes.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Jammu, Uchit Singhal, said cherries are extremely delicate and require rapid transportation to preserve quality. He added that the Railways have adequate parcel vans and logistical resources this season to meet demand from traders.
