New Delhi: Saudi government officials revealed that in 2023, a total of 18 lakh Indian Muslims participated in Umrah, securing the third-highest position globally.
Umrah, an Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah, is open year-round for devotees. While the top two countries with the most Umrah performers weren’t disclosed, emphasis was placed on India’s significant role in this pilgrimage.Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah, made a landmark visit to India. During a December 4 to 6 meeting facilitated by the unified government platform ‘Nusuk,’ Dr Al-Rabiah engaged in discussions and showcased the platform’s services for Muslim guests worldwide, with special attention to India.Nusuk’s primary objective is to streamline electronic visa procedures and access protocols for Umrah and visits to the Prophet’s Mosque.Representatives from Indian travel agencies lauded Nusuk for its potential in enhancing Umrah experiences for Indian pilgrims, raising service standards.Hasan Al-Dabbagh, President of APAC Markets at the Saudi Tourism Authority, highlighted Nusuk’s pivotal role in creating a comprehensive Umrah ecosystem, benefiting Saudi Arabia’s private sector and global entities, particularly in India.Nusuk’s ongoing support includes data sharing, training programs, and strategic partnerships between service providers and pilgrims.
