Officials told GNS that the accident occurred this afternoon when continuous rains made the stretch slippery. The vehicles reportedly lost control and plunged into the gorge.

An immediate rescue operation was launched by Sopore Police, troops of Army’s 32RR, and local volunteers. Working in difficult weather, the teams descended into the gorge and evacuated all five injured persons.

The injured were shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla for treatment. Their condition was not immediately ascertained.

Eyewitnesses credited the quick response of security forces and residents for the timely evacuation, saying it helped avert a bigger tragedy.

Police have taken cognizance of the incident. The exact cause of the accident is being ascertained and further details are awaited. (GNS)
