New Delhi, Jan 2: In a major breakthrough for ophthalmic care in India, the Ophthalmology Department of Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Delhi Cantt, has successfully carried out the country’s first 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography combined with iStent implantation, marking a significant advancement in the treatment of glaucoma.
The pioneering procedure integrates cutting-edge 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography with iStent, a form of Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), enabling real-time visualisation of aqueous humour outflow pathways during surgery. Performed using a newly introduced stand-mounted Spectralis imaging system along with a state-of-the-art 3D operating microscope, the procedure enhances surgical precision and optimises long-term clinical outcomes.
Glaucoma, one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide, often progresses silently until advanced stages. This innovative approach allows surgeons to identify functional drainage channels intraoperatively and tailor interventions with greater accuracy, significantly improving patient safety and effectiveness of treatment.
As a first-of-its-kind procedure in India, the successful integration of advanced 3D imaging with iStent implantation sets a new benchmark in glaucoma management. It underscores the Armed Forces Medical Services’ commitment to adopting world-class medical technologies and delivering cutting-edge healthcare.
Beyond its clinical significance, the achievement represents a strategic advancement for the Armed Forces community, reinforcing efforts to preserve vision, enhance quality of life, and maintain operational readiness through superior medical care.
