Srinagar, Aug 13: As the nation gears up to celebrate its 77th Independence Day, Srinagar has introduced a powerful new symbol of courage and patriotism: the Balidan Stambh. This memorial, constructed in the heart of the city, honors the sacrifices of countless heroes who have defended the nation, with a particular focus on those who laid down their lives in the troubled region of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Balidan Stambh, completed by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) under the leadership of Commissioner Dr. Owais Ahmed, stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who have shaped the region’s history. Dr. Owais, during a visit to the site, lauded the dedication of the workers, engineers, and the Smart City team who ensured the memorial was ready in time for the August 15 celebrations.
“This memorial is more than just a structure; it embodies the spirit of those who gave their lives for the country. It reminds us of the strength and courage that have defined our region for years,” Dr. Owais remarked.
He further emphasized that the Balidan Stambh symbolizes unity, reflecting the shared history and sacrifices of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Owais extended an open invitation to residents and visitors alike, encouraging them to visit the memorial, which will be accessible to the public free of charge. “I encourage everyone to visit and understand the importance of this memorial. It’s a place to reflect and remember,” he added.
In preparation for the upcoming Independence Day events, Srinagar is abuzz with activity. The SMC has made meticulous arrangements to ensure that all essential services, including cleanliness, road maintenance, drainage, and water supply, are in top condition for the occasion. The Balidan Stambh project, completed with a budget of ₹4.8 crores, marks a significant milestone for the city, Commissioner Owais noted.
