Srinagar, Aug 31 : A 60-year-old man from the old city Srinagar has donated 195 pints of blood over the last 46 years, earning the title of the ‘Blood Man of Kashmir’ for his sustained contribution to voluntary blood donation in the Valley.
Shabbir Hussain Khan, a resident of the downtown area, began his journey in 1980 when a friend required an emergency transfusion at SMHS Hospital. It was during this episode that Khan discovered he had the rare O-negative blood group, which makes him a universal donor.
“I started with my friend’s need. I felt the pain of those who die waiting for blood. That gave me the purpose to continue,” Khan told news agency .
Over the decades, Shabir has not only donated blood regularly but has also emerged as a key organiser in the Valley’s voluntary health sector. He has conducted over 1,500 blood donation camps across Kashmir, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, to maintain supply for patients in need.
“I have promised myself that I will keep donating as long as I am alive. Saving lives gives me satisfaction. Our religion also teaches us to serve humanity,” he said.
Despite his extensive contribution, Khan’s efforts have largely gone unrecognised by the establishment. He runs awareness programmes across Kashmir to encourage youth participation in blood donation but expressed concern over the lack of official encouragement.
“The government does not encourage blood donors. My name was recommended for a state award ten times, but I was never selected. We don’t need cash, only encouragement,” he said.
However, the absence of formal honours has not dampened Khan’s resolve. For him, the reward lies in the gratitude of those he has helped.
“People pray for me. That is my biggest reward,” he added.
