Police today claimed to have foiled a bovine smuggling bid by arresting one person and rescuing 31 bovine animals on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Udhampur district.

Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted two Srinagar- bound trucks near Tikri in Rehmbal in Udhampur district last evening and foiled the smuggling bid, a police spokesman said.

He said that 31 bovine animals were found illegally loaded in the trucks in a very “cruel manner”.

One of the drivers, Feroz Din, a resident of Poonch, was arrested while another fled from the spot and efforts are on to nab him, the spokesman said.

All the bovine animals were rescued and both the vehicles were seized, he added.

Transportation of bovine within regions and districts in the Jammu division is banned by the state government.
