Scandals have been an integral part of human history, shaping the course of nations and industries. Let’s take a journey through some of India’s most notable scandals and explore what we can learn from them.In 1971, a daring heist took place when former army captain Rustom Sohrab Nagarwala withdrew Rs. 60 lakh from the State Bank of India, claiming to be acting on the instructions of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The case remains shrouded in mystery, with numerous conspiracy theories surrounding Nagarwala’s true motives and the government’s involvement.
One such scandal was the Kangan, Kashmir Treasury Robbery Case in 1958, where a Naib Tehsildar looted the treasury of Rs. 85,000 and framed his peon. The poor orderly was wrongly accused and suffered immense hardship, ultimately succumbing to a heart attack and dying a few years later. A subsequent investigation revealed the truth, and the Naib Tehsildar was jailed and suspended for 14 years. Shockingly, the officer was later promoted and paid arrears.
The Jeep Scandal of 1948 is another notable example, where V.K. Krishna Menon, India’s High Commissioner to the UK, placed an order for hundreds of jeeps worth lakhs of rupees, bypassing protocol. This scandal highlighted issues of accountability and transparency in government dealings.
Other notable scandals in India include Harshad Mehta’s shareholder scams, a major stock market scandal in the 1990s that involved securities trading and banking irregularities. Vijay Mallya’s Kingfisher Airlines debacle is another example, where the airline’s collapse was attributed to financial mismanagement, leading to allegations of bank fraud and defaulted loans.
The Commonwealth Games Scandal of 2010 is another significant example of corruption and mismanagement. The Organizing Committee, led by Suresh Kalmadi, was accused of awarding inflated contracts.
Recent Scandals:

  • Sharda Chit Fund Scam: This scandal involved a Ponzi scheme run by the Sharda Group, which collected Rs. 2,500 crores from 17 lakh investors by promising high returns.
  • Saradha Group Financial Scandal: Similar to the Sharda scam, the Saradha Group collapsed in 2013, affecting 1.7 million depositors who invested Rs. 200-300 billion.
  • Srinagar Haj Scam: A private Haj operative company in Srinagar duped innocent pilgrims for lakhs of rupees each and went underground. Although the police caught the scammers and recovered some money partially, the incident highlights the need for stricter regulations and oversight in the Haj pilgrimage industry.
  • JNK Bank Scandal (1978): A bank clerk, K.K. Dhar, swindled a huge amount of lakhs of rupees from the Bombay branch of JNK Bank and spent the money lavishly on discos and gambling. Upon enquiry, it was revealed that Dhar had fraudulently swept the money and was dismissed from services.
  • JNK Medical Health Department Scandal: The saline supply to hospitals was found to be adulterated and even fungus-infested, causing immense problems to patients. Upon enquiry, the then Director of Health Services was involved in the scam and placed under suspension. Later, the officer was reinstated and given a grade promotion.
    Key Takeaways:
  • Robust Checks and Balances: Essential for preventing scandals and ensuring accountability in governance and business.
  • Transparency and Good Governance: Crucial for maintaining public trust and preventing financial mismanagement.
  • Judiciary’s Role: The judiciary has played a vital role in upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability in these scandals.
