Secretary to Government, School Education Department, Farooq Ahmad
Shah Wednesday released first Concise Kashmiri Dictionary published by
J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages.
The function, presided over by noted Kashmiri writer, Prof. Shafi
Shouq, was held at the seminar hall of the Academy here in presence
of a large number of writers, poets and intellectuals.
Secretary Education, Farooq Ahmad Shah, Secretary Academy, Dr. Aziz
Hajini, noted writer, Manshoor Banihali, and Academy’s Chief Editor
Encylopaedia, Muzaffar Ahmad Tak were also in the presidium.
As part of the release function, Aijaz Mohammed Sheikh, Assistant
Professor Linguistics, University of Kashmir presented an in-depth
paper on the topic ‘Concise Kashmiri Dictionary’.
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary Academy, Dr. Aziz Hajini,
spoke about the rich cultural and linguistic diversity of Jammu
and Kashmir and said the Academy was committed to promote this.
He said encylopaedia’s and dictionaries were crucial for promotion and
development of languages and it was important to discuss language
issues and find solutions through regular academic and literary
interactions.
Hajini described the dictionary as a useful asset for school, college
and university students pursuing Kashmiri as a subject.
Commending the Academy for publication of quality literature,
Secretary Education, Farooq Ahmad Shah said that publication of such
type of literature was welcome as it promotes quality reading. He also
said that necessary steps were being taken to promote Kashmiri and
other languages at school and college levels.
Giving his presidential remarks Prof. Shafi Shouq asked the writers of
Kashmiri language to write about rich culture, literature and history
of Valley for enrichment of literary treasure of the State.
Prominent among those who graced the occasion included Sharif-ud-Din
Shariq, Dr. Rafiq Masoodi, Mohammed Amin Bhat, Rukhsana Jabeen, Dildar
Ashraf Shah and Abdul Ahad Hajini.
