Barriers fall away in the world of poetry, and the imagination is free to venture into unexplored territory. It is a haven where thoughts and feelings converge and where the impossibly becomes doable. The poet can conjure up imaginative settings, arouse strong feelings, and dig into the depths of human experience through creative imagination. The poem by Dr. Farooq Fayaz is an excellent illustration of the poetic imagination and capacity to seize moments from everyday life which demonstrate the harsh reality of human limitations. The poet explores the subconscious mind’s inner workings through his artistic expression, illuminating the complicated processes that play out in front of his vigilant inner eye. The poet looks into the depths of reality in this profound vision in an effort to comprehend the complexity that exist all around us. He skillfully use sarcasm as a weapon to contrast human inefficiency with our struggle to face and overcome obstacles. The poem stands as a strong example of the poetic imagination’s ability to reflect the challenges and tragic moments of life. Dr. Farooq Fayaz asks us to consider our own limitations and the fortitude needed to overcome the challenges that life throws at us through this artistic endeavour.
The poem “An Owl” serves as a poignant representation of our collective experience, capturing the restlessness and yearning of the poet to give voice to his race, which has long been confined and oppressed. Through the skillful use of various literary techniques, Dr. Farooq adeptly creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and searching.
The condition of groping, portrayed in the poem, can be likened to a filmmaker skillfully utilising his tools to generate ethereal and ghostly shadows. Dr. Fayaz showcases his mastery over language, employing light and shadow metaphorically to illuminate the contrasting aspects within a singular entity.
By juxtaposing light and shadow, the poet highlights the dichotomy present in the world. It symbolises the duality of existence, where opposing forces coexist within the same reality. The two camps of a single piece of currency represent the conflicting aspects of society, such as privilege and marginalisation, power and oppression, or hope and despair.
Through his poetic craftsmanship, Dr. Fayaz unveils the struggle and tension within the human condition, reflecting the collective longing for liberation and the need to confront and transcend the limitations imposed upon us.

An Owl

In a state of groping, I discreetly stole a glance down the street…
Indeed, I ventured to knock on every door,
But the weight of silence had already left its mark on every window
Why do my footsteps fail to align with the rhythm of my steps?
A darkness, like a sudden eruption, engulfs the depths of my fearful consciousness…
I yearn to erase every trace of my own shadowy presence,
What has rendered these dilapidated huts devoid of their protective roofs?
As the resounding barks of dogs emanate from a nearby yard
Then, I felt the unhinged doors all
In every yard I ventured into, shadows congregated
Could it be that the human race, too, is confined in vaults?
With a cloak of woes draped around their weary necks
Merely awaiting for their turn vigilantly
And amidst it all, an owl, a nocturnal creature
Watchful and perceptive, finds solace in the city’s nocturnal embrace
Deriving delight from the secrets whispered in the darkness.

This poem’s voyage through its abstract environment is unavoidably allegorical. The physical act of knocking on the doors and the depiction of human steps tainted by a fluctuating conscience serve to deepen the levels of significance in the poem.
It becomes clear that these decayed routes desire for a saviour as the reader is led through the damaging alleys, illustrating the connection between darkness and devastation. The poem reveals the hypocrisy of human suffering, which is only observed and relished by the owl. The owl’s regular watching confounds human reason and reveals the bruised conscience of lesser gods who are still unaware. In the poem, the hypocrisy of human suffering is shown, as it is only the owl who sees it and rejoices in it. The owl’s brooding confounds human reason and reveals the wounded consciousness of lesser gods who are still unconscious.
This poem essentially tells the story of our own failings and diminished consciousness. The fragile exterior of the sensitive poet’s eye, which sees the world through the lens of the owl, is shattered by the presentation of this voyage through the watchful owl’s eyes and the potent image of mental acrobatics in response to an internal chaos. The battered subways of unsavoury encounters eloquently depict the ignorance and apathy that have engulfed humanity as we have shut ourselves away in the cozy confines of carelessness.
The inclusion of organic imagery enhances the visual imagery in the poem and enables a seamless fusion of the narrator’s suffering and the owl’s vigilance. The sensory experience is enhanced by this integration, further enveloping the reader in the intricate details of the human condition.
In fact, the use of dog barking to stir up the environment and capture the chaotic essence of the city results in a feeling of discomfort and anxiety has been masterly employed. This audio component enhances the atmosphere by expressing the tension and difficulties the locals are experiencing. In contrast, the careful ogling of the perched owl acts as an invitation. It challenges the reader to alter their own perceptions, take on new perspectives, and delve further into the poem’s multiple levels of significance. With its acute observation skills and nocturnal habits, the owl symbolises heightened awareness and the capacity to see under the surface.
Through this juxtaposition, the poet skillfully showcases the dichotomy between the agony experienced by the city and the pleasure derived by the nocturnal bird. The owl takes comfort and perhaps even pleasure in seeing the fate of the man who stand for the imperfect character of humans, while the city, with its forlornness and struggles, becomes a source of anguish.
The poet asks the reader to consider the intricate interplay between pain and observation, between misery and pleasure, by fusing these diametrically opposed aspects. Overall, the poem gains depth and richness from the poet’s skillful depiction of the city’s suffering and the owl’s insightful joy, leaving the reader with a sense of reflection and a greater respect for the complexities of our existence.
