Introduction
Poetry, at its highest level, is not merely an arrangement of words but an awakening of thought, emotion, and consciousness. In the vast landscape of Kashmiri literature, Professor Shad Ramzan represents kashmiri literature as a poet whose work exemplifies this elevated function of poetry. His poetic vision reflects sensitivity, intellectual depth, and a refined command over language, making his contribution both distinctive and enduring. What sets Professor Shad Ramzan apart is his ability to harmonize emotional resonance with philosophical inquiry. His poetry does not confine itself to a single domain; instead, it moves fluidly across devotional, philosophical, and social terrains. This thematic diversity is not superficial but deeply rooted in contemplation and lived experience. Each subject he approaches is treated with serious

ness of purpose and artistic discipline, allowing the reader to encounter familiar realities through unfamiliar perspectives.
Since the poetic style of Dr. Shad Ramzan constitutes a vast and comprehensive treasure, it seems appropriate to begin by presenting a few lines drawn from one of his devotional poems (Guftaar). These verses make it easier to grasp Shad Sahib’s methodology, stylistic flow, and intellectual temperament, and subsequently allow the reader to approach the study of his poetry in a more purposeful and coherent manner.

“Az yuthui woth Shaam sadkan peth te Aalam go Rahith
La tamah go Fitratuk Akh Akh Hawas
Be Sada Butraath
Manzil Taam Nazran go Watis
Zanti Akh Bai Aanth sehra
Aeth andar akh naag
Naagas peth chu kul”
(Nazam : Guftaar)

The purpose of presenting these lines as an introduction is to highlight the fluidity of Shad’s poetic style, his vivid imagery, and his remarkable ability to articulate thought on the basis of experience and observation. The narrative of each line is simple, idiomatic, and rich in meaning. Every word is imbued with an enduring sensibility, reflecting the truth that whichever path Shad traverses, his pen scatters the essence of expression and communication with effortless grace.
Simplicity in Metaphors
A defining feature of Shad Ramzan’s poetry is his mastery of metaphor. His use of symbolic language expands the expressive potential of Kashmiri poetry, offering layers of meaning that unfold gradually. Metaphors in his work are not ornamental; they function as intellectual bridges between the visible and the invisible, the material and the metaphysical. Through allusions, signs, and subtle suggestions, he invites the reader into a participatory act of interpretation, where meaning is discovered rather than imposed.
Linguistically, his poetry is marked by a rare balance between tradition and modernity. He draws from the classical reservoir of Kashmiri diction while simultaneously embracing contemporary expressions. This synthesis gives his verse a timeless quality—rooted in heritage yet responsive to the present. The fluency of his language ensures that complexity never turns into obscurity; even when dealing with profound ideas, his poetic voice remains accessible and engaging. The metaphors employed by Shad Ramzan are both traditional and unconventional; yet in either form, the depth of meaning remains strikingly evident. For instance:

“Dopnam Kuniruk aagur chaaw
Dopmas Doun Hyund Nyaai Aenz raaw
Dopnam daawas loguth paan
Dopmas Wyud chun kah ti padaaw”

These verses, infused with a Sufi sensibility, possess a force that allows them to contain an entire world within themselves, guiding the reader through an ocean of inner states and spiritual experiences. Each word is simple and graceful, yet the poetry clearly reveals a multi-layered system of metaphors. Through this richness of symbolic approach, the verses invite multiple interpretations, demonstrating how apparent simplicity can carry profound and expansive meaning. Every verse is used in as metaphysical way as a beautiful metaphor few more examples

“Wufaan te myon dil yud , Tufan samndars
Shuthaan te naag pokhryan, cxokaan chu sekli aab”

in the above verse “Wufun”, “Shuthun & “Cxokun” are the most beautiful metaphors reflecting highness of inner discourage and reduction of multiple physical as well as metaphysical existing things uniformly. These are the most important treatments that beautify Shaad’s expression more
Expression of Different Subjects in Shaad’s Poetry
Although his poetry does not arise from scientific experimentation or empirical observation, it is nonetheless informed by a keen awareness of human existence. His philosophical depth springs from reflection rather than formula, from introspection rather than abstraction. Existential questions, moral dilemmas, and spiritual longings are woven seamlessly into his verse, giving his poetry an inner gravity that lingers with the reader long after the lines have been read.
In the poetry of Shad Ramzan, themes such as love, devotion, separation, and spiritual states occupy a central place. Consider, for instance, the following couplet:

“karaan Gath Shaad Ramzan kaab zenith
Gul Rokhas chenis
diwan chui bose furqaanas sipara tohi gawah roziv”

From these lines, it becomes evident that Shad’s pen, as if washed in musk and perfume, offers devotional poetry of exceptional refinement—whether in the form of Naat, Hamd, or Manqabat. His verse carries an intensity of faith and reverence that elevates it beyond mere expression into an act of spiritual offering. Another example, drawn from a Manqabat, further illustrates this dimension:

“Alam daaras Halamm daerith be aasi
paedis nish poad juda romut musafir
Pyomut asmaane dab logmut zameenas”

These lines, taken from the poem “Hazrat Alaam daar,” are addressed as a heartfelt invocation, presenting a vivid testimony to spiritual ecstasy and the exalted spiritual stature of the revered figure. Through such verses, Shad Ramzan not only evokes profound inner states but also affirms his stature as a successful and accomplished poet whose devotion finds luminous expression in language.
Social consciousness also occupies a significant place in Professor Shad Ramzan’s poetic universe. Without resorting to overt rhetoric, he addresses social realities with sensitivity and restraint. His poetry reflects concern for human values, collective memory, and ethical responsibility. Rather than delivering judgments, he presents situations and symbols that provoke thought, encouraging readers to arrive at their own understanding of society and self.
Shad Ramzan stands like a radiant lamp of social awakening, through whose light the windows of consciousness are opened. Yet even in this realm, his approach remains distinct. In his poetry, awareness is not conveyed through cold argument or direct sermon; instead, he expresses social consciousness through an emotional and humane mode of articulation. A striking example of this is the poem “Praaji kaaluk naag hokh.”
This poem is written in the form of a dialogue, and it draws the reader into a condition that gradually pulls them out of the realm of fiction and places them face to face with lived reality. Through this dialogic structure, Shad transforms social awareness into an intimate experience, allowing emotion to become the medium through which truth is recognized and internalized
Another notable strength of his poetry lies in its traditional rhythmic flow. The natural movement of his lines enhances the emotional impact of his themes. This rhythmic ease, combined with intellectual rigor, makes his poetry both aesthetically pleasing and mentally stimulating. It is this dual appeal—of sound and sense—that gives his work a lasting resonance. Example :

“Sabar korum te sabras thowum ne kahn hisaab
Agar ne az pagah chus dinui kathan jawaab
Safar te zyooth tanha pakaan chu karwaan
Agar bai Neib shahras khotui ne aaftab”
In these verses a reader clearly observes that instead of metaphoric depth the awful traditional treatment in words have not lost their pathway of expression. This way of writing makes Shaad a strong voice ever
Professor Shad Ramzan’s contribution to Kashmiri poetry can thus be seen as both preservative and progressive. He preserves the essence of poetic tradition while pushing its boundaries through metaphorical innovation and thematic expansion. His poetry does not seek immediate applause; instead, it invites slow reading, reflection, and return. In essence, the poetry of Professor Shad Ramzan stands as a testament to the enduring power of language when guided by thought, sensitivity, and vision. His work enriches Kashmiri literature by offering not only beauty of expression but also depth of meaning—an achievement that secures his place among the significant poetic voices of his time.
Shad Ramzan holds an immense and deeply rooted love for the Kashmiri language. While he is undoubtedly a prose writer and a critic, what stands out even more is that Shad is not a self-fashioned poet but a self-sustained and genuinely accomplished one. In the closing line of “Bae Kaeshir Zabaan Chas,” he declares, “Bae chaes shaad ramzan sunnd Shoakh tehreer,” a line that clearly affirms his conscious confidence in his craft. This assertion makes it evident that Shad Sahib is not only a poet of his own time but one whose voice will continue to be remembered and resonant across many generations to come.
I still remember the time when I had an honor to read Shaad Sir’s poem “Praj kaaluk Naag Hokh” that has brought me a narrative that Kashmir is the land of spiritual essence.
