Jammu, Feb 19: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary on Thursday cautioned government officers against interfering in religious affairs, asserting that matters of faith must be handled with sensitivity and restraint.
Choudhary made the remarks in response to an order issued by the District Development Commissioner of Kishtwar directing religious bodies to seek prior approval from the administration before collecting donations. The directive had triggered reactions in certain quarters, prompting the Deputy Chief Minister to underline the need for caution while dealing with religious institutions.
Stating that every religion has its own internal affairs and established practices, Choudhary said officers should refrain from unnecessary interference. “It is a new world, and there are new officers. When you have power in your hands, you can do anything,” he remarked, adding that authority must be exercised within constitutional and administrative limits.
He emphasized that while the government is committed to transparency and accountability, such objectives should not lead to actions that may be perceived as encroachment upon religious freedoms.
