Srinagar, Apr 27 : The Lieutenant Governor’s Office in Ladakh on Monday announced the creation of five new districts—Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass—through a post on X.
As per the post, the notification for the new districts has been approved, taking the total number of districts in the Union Territory from two to seven.
The post stated that the decision addresses a long-pending demand of the people and aims to strengthen governance at the grassroots level.
It further mentioned that the move is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for Ladakh.
The LG Office, in the same post, referred to the role of the Ministry of Home Affairs and mentioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah, stating that the decision had already been approved by the Ministry in August 2024 under his leadership.
According to the post, the creation of new districts will help decentralise governance and ensure faster delivery of public services, especially in remote areas.
It added that the move is expected to create opportunities for growth, employment and entrepreneurship.
In the post on X, the LG Office said, “A historic day for Ladakh… I have approved the notification for creation of five new districts… This decision, already approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs in August 2024 under the leadership of Hon’ble Minister of Home Affairs Shri Amit Shah, would strengthen grassroots governance and ensure faster delivery of public services.”(KNS)
