An official told news agency the victim, identified as Parveena Bano, daughter of Mohammad Younis Malik, was attacked when she was on the outskirts of the village, he said.

Locals rushed to her rescue and shifted her to Sub-District Hospital Tanghdar, where doctors referred her to Srinagar for advanced treatment owing to the critical nature of her.

The incident has triggered panic among residents of forest-fringe villages, who claim that movement of wild animals has increased in recent weeks.

Locals have urged the Wildlife Department and district administration to take immediate preventive measures to ensure the safety of people living in vulnerable areas.
