GMC Srinagar Orders Rotational Headship in 14 Departments; Senior Professors Appointed as HODs

SRINAGAR, June 18: Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has ordered a rotational change in the heads of several academic departments, appointing senior professors as Heads of Departments (HODs) in accordance with the Government’s rotational headship policy.

According to Order No. 125-GS of 2026 dated June 17, 2026, issued by the Principal/Dean, GMC Srinagar, the appointments have been made in compliance with Government Order No. 527-JK (HME) of 2023 and subsequent directions of the Health and Medical Education Department.

As per the order, senior faculty members have been designated as Heads of 14 departments, including Ophthalmology, Pathology, Medicine, Physiology, Surgery, Anesthesiology, Respiratory Medicine, Orthopaedics, Anatomy, ENT, Cardiology, Radiation Oncology, Biochemistry and Community Medicine.

Among those appointed are Prof. (Dr.) Afroz Ahmad Khan as Head of Ophthalmology, Prof. (Dr.) Lateef Ahmad Wani as Head of Pathology, Prof. (Dr.) Mohd Ismail as Head of Medicine, Prof. (Dr.) Suhail Ahmad Gilkar as Head of Physiology, Prof. (Dr.) M.R. Attri as Head of Surgery and Prof. (Dr.) Javid Iqbal Naqshbandi as Head of Anesthesiology.

Similarly, Prof. (Dr.) Khurshid Ahmad Dar has been designated as Head of Respiratory Medicine, Prof. (Dr.) Imtiyaz Hussain Dar as Head of Orthopaedics, Prof. (Dr.) Bashir Ahmad Shah as Head of Anatomy, Prof. (Dr.) Showkat Ahmad Showkat as Head of ENT, Prof. (Dr.) Bashir Ahmad Naikoo as Head of Cardiology, Prof. (Dr.) Mushood G Nabi as Head of Radiation Oncology, Prof. (Dr.) Roohi Ashraf as Head of Biochemistry and Prof. (Dr.) Mohd Iqbal Pandit as Head of Community Medicine.

The order states that the appointments have come into effect from June 17, 2026, with tenure periods varying across departments as per the rotational headship policy.

Officials said the move is aimed at ensuring transparency, academic leadership and effective departmental administration in one of the premier medical institutions of Jammu and Kashmir.

Copies of the order have been forwarded to the Health and Medical Education Department, Director SKIMS, Principals of all Government Medical Colleges in J&K, administrators of associated hospitals and other concerned authorities for information and necessary action.

The rotational headship system was introduced by the Government to provide equitable opportunities to senior faculty members and strengthen institutional governance in medical colleges across the Union Territory.
