Gulzar Ahmad Ganai, a maestro entrenched in the cultural tapestry of Kashmir, has carved an indelible niche in the realm of music, his melodious resonance echoing through the hearts of generations for over three decades. Amidst the variegated symphony of Kashmiri music genres—Sufiyana, Light Music, and Folk—Gulzar Ganai stands as a towering figure, weaving stories through his soulful renditions.
Hailing from the rustic hamlet of Mirgund in north Kashmir, Ganai’s journey was a convergence of paternal yearnings and maternal aspirations. His father, a tiller of the land, harbored a fervor for folk music, desiring his son to embrace this melodious heritage. Conversely, his mother, envisioning a different path, aspired for her son to tread the corridors of medicine or engineering.

His inception into the world of music began as a luminary among peers, garnering recognition as a child artist, a harbinger of the musical luminescence that would follow. Under the tutelage of folk stalwarts Mohammad Abdulla Ganai and Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, he imbibed the musical essence for eight enriching years.
Gulzar’s lyrical journey commenced in the vibrant echoes of a rural classroom, where the weekly “Friday meetings” served as a vibrant showcase for budding talents. These gatherings were not mere events but the pulse of entertainment for an entire village, a stage where young minds delved into singing, acting, and cultural pursuits. It was here, amidst these spirited congregations, that Gulzar’s mellifluous voice began to captivate hearts.
The turning point arrived during one such meeting when, at the behest of his teacher, Gulzar sang verses by the illustrious Sufi poet Mohammad Sidiq Bhat. His voice echoed, weaving a spell that left an indelible mark on all who heard it. This marked the genesis of his journey as a singer, leading him to lead morning prayers and paving the path towards a musical destiny.

While his father recognized and nourished this talent, his mother harbored reservations, envisioning a different path for her son. Yet, destiny beckoned, and Gulzar’s vocal prowess soon became a familiar delight not just within his school but across neighboring regions.
Fate took a definitive turn when his father, recognizing his potential, arranged for Gulzar to learn the art of singing from renowned folk singer Mohammad Abdulla Ganie. A night in Beerwah village became the stage for his formal debut, as he serenaded an unsuspecting audience with Samad Mir’s poetry, a performance that sparked the ignition of his professional musical journey.
Years cascaded by, painting a portrait of musical maturation and evolution. From Ganie’s group to Radio Kashmir, from learning through radio legends to forming his own musical ensemble, Gulzar’s melodious odyssey brimmed with experiences that shaped him into the maestro he became.
However, the tumultuous 1990s cast a pall over Kashmir, stifling the cadence of music amidst the cacophony of conflict. Despite the prevailing gloom, Gulzar and his fellow artists persevered, seeking solace in their artistry, even as societal circumstances urged silence in the face of mourning.
Beyond being a virtuoso folk singer, Ganai’s influence extends far beyond the realms of mere melody. His stewardship as the Chairman of the Kashmir Gluakar Society, the bastion of Kashmiri singers, reverberated notably during the recent Covid vaccination camp orchestrated by the J&K Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages, underscoring his leadership.
Venturing beyond the verdant valleys of Kashmir, Ganai’s musical resonance transcended borders, permeating the Bollywood realm with his two Kashmiri compositions in the award-winning film “Tahaan” (2007), a poignant narrative echoing the essence of Kashmir, starring the legendary Anupam Kher.
In an homage to Mahatma Gandhi, Ganai harmonized the Kashmiri rendition of Gandhi’s cherished bhajan, “Vaishnav Jan to,” commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, testament to his multifaceted artistic repertoire.
During the tempestuous years of unrest, Ganai emerged as a cultural emissary, bearing Kashmir’s legacy to the global stage. He adorned the global arena as India’s envoy, gracing cultural festivals in Dubai, Egypt, and Central Asian realms, weaving a cultural tapestry that transcends boundaries.
Gulzar’s tireless dedication and contribution to Kashmiri music earned him accolades and recognition, cementing his place not just as a virtuoso but as a torchbearer for aspiring talents. His success resonates beyond borders, transcending geographical confines to instill hope in budding artists, urging them to pursue their dreams ardently.
