Police sources said that Rafiq Ahmed Bhat alias Dada was present in Tral market when two unidentified suspected militants on motor-cycle emerged there and pumped bullets in his neck.

“Dada was rushed to Sub-District Hospital Tral where doctors referred him to SMHS Hospital Srinagar, however, he succumbed to his injures on way near Awantipora,” the official said adding that a manhunt has been launched to nab the attackers.

The deceased is survived by his parents, wife and a six year old polio-ridden girl child.

Sources told news agency CNS that the deceased was a former militant and after his release from prison he had took to fruit business. “He owned a load-carrier and was selling fruits.”

“Over a dozen FIR’s stood registered against the deceased in different police stations for his alleged involvement in militancy related activities. He had been also arrested under Public Safety Act many times,” said a family member of the slain civilian.

He said that police had arrested him for his alleged involvement in a grenade attack on 6 April 2014 that left many dead at Bus Stand Tral.
