Raising the issue of assault of two students in Haryana, the opposition parties on Saturday alleged that the government had failed to protect the students from Jammu and Kashmir studying outside the state.

As soon as the proceedings of the House began, the National Conference and Congress legislators stood up from their seats and raised the issue of assault on two students in Mahendragarh town of Haryana yesterday.

NC legislator from Khanyar Ali Mohammad Sagar termed as “unfortunate” the thrashing of two students by goons while they were returning to the Haryana Central University after offering Friday prayers.

He said the government had “failed” to ensure safety of students studying outside the state.

He said such incidents will further alienate “our students” from the rest of India.

Minister for parliamentary affairs Abdul Rehman Veeri said police in Haryana have arrested three accused.

Giving details, he said that two students from Jammu and Kashmir were thrashed allegedly by a group of 15 people in Mahendragarh.

“The police have arrested three of them and identified three more persons,” he told the House.

He said they have taken up the issue with the Haryana government and strict action will be taken against the miscreants.

Amjad Ali and Aaftab Ahmad – both residents of Rajouri district – were assaulted as they were returning to their university after offering Friday prayers.
