Hurriyat (M) chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was detained on Friday after he attempted to defy restrictions to march towards Anantnag where Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) has called a public rally today.
Eye witnesses said that a posse of policemen deployed outside his Nigeen residence where he was under house arrest detained Mirwaiz after he tried to defy restrictions.
An official said that Mirwaiz was lodged at Nigeen police station.
Earlier, Mirwaiz tweeted that he will defy house arrest at 12.30 pm and “try to march towards Islambad as per the programme of JRL to show solidarity with the people of south Kashmir who continue to bear the severe brunt of occupation!”
JRL has called a rally in Lal Chowk Anantnag today as part of their public outreach programme.
However, authorities imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar and Anantnag district to foil the rally. Several Hurriyat leaders were arrested on Wednesday to prevent the rally.
