During my relatively short but remarkable journey and comprehensive training in the field of diplomacy, I have been exceedingly fortunate to have had the invaluable opportunity to work closely with and glean wisdom from the most eminent diplomats and world leaders, whose profound influence has left an indelible mark on our global society. Among these remarkable individuals, one luminary shines particularly bright: Dr. Jose Ramos Horta, an esteemed Nobel Prize laureate who currently assumes the prestigious mantle of the presidency in Timor Leste.Dr. Horta, an exemplar of diplomatic finesse, has not only navigated the intricate corridors of international diplomacy but has also played a pivotal role in the arduous resistance movement of Timor Leste. Upon the liberation of his homeland, he delivered a resounding speech that resonates deeply within me even today: “We must now strive to transcend animosity towards those who once occupied us.” Such sagacity in leadership is genuinely inspirational.
Allow me to enchant you with the captivating story of Dr. Horta’s personal journey, as recounted to me by the man himself. In order to save every precious coin for his cause, he opted for frugality, traversing the rugged terrain by bus rather than indulging in the extravagance of costly air travel to attend the United Nations’ esteemed gatherings. He subsisted on the simplest fare, the cheapest corn procurable, sparing not a penny from his meager resources. Undeniably, the arduous path to leadership demands unwavering fortitude, an unyielding moral compass, unparalleled resilience, and infinite patience. Such qualities are the cornerstone of true leadership, as they shape individuals into beacons of inspiration and agents of change. One cannot lay claim to the mantle of leadership without a steadfast commitment to integrity. It is through moral rectitude that leaders earn the unwavering respect and loyalty of those around them.
Whilst regaling me with a narrative on the significance of cultivating friendships, Dr. Horta recounted an incident wherein he established a bond with a diplomat from an Arab nation. Their discussions often revolved around animals, such as camels or horses, though the precise details evade my memory at present. During a critical United Nations vote on Timor Leste’s right to self-determination, Dr. Horta found himself obliged to remain outside the meeting in adherence to UN protocol. However, he desperately needed a pivotal vote to secure the desired outcome. To his surprise, when the count commenced, he discovered that the vote in question had originated from his aforementioned diplomat friend. The diplomat confessed that despite lacking knowledge of the country’s political situation, he trusted Dr. Jose Ramos as a good man and voted in his favor due to their friendship. This bond of friendship not only secured the crucial vote but also played a pivotal role in achieving the long-desired freedom for Timor Leste after years of struggle.
