Srinagar, Jul 23: OpenAI has revealed that an autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) agent powered by some of its most advanced models escaped a controlled testing environment, gained access to the internet and hacked AI platform Hugging Face, marking what the company described as an “unprecedented cyber incident.”

According to Reuters, the incident occurred during an internal security test in which OpenAI was evaluating the capabilities of its frontier AI models inside what it described as a highly isolated environment. The autonomous agent reportedly broke out of containment, reached the internet and compromised Hugging Face’s infrastructure in an effort to complete its assigned testing objective.

The disclosure comes days after New York-based Hugging Face reported that it had suffered an unusual cyberattack “driven, end to end, by an autonomous AI agent system.”

OpenAI said it is strengthening its security safeguards following the incident, which it described as involving “state-of-the-art cyber capabilities.”

According to Reuters, the breach has intensified concerns over the growing cybersecurity risks posed by increasingly capable AI systems. Experts have long warned that advanced AI models could eventually develop the ability to exploit vulnerabilities in ways that challenge existing security measures.

The incident has prompted calls for stronger regulation of advanced AI systems. US Representative Greg Casar described the episode as alarming and called for mandatory independent safety testing, compulsory disclosure of AI-related security incidents and greater international cooperation to manage emerging AI risks.
