The International Cricket Council has slapped Indian team with a 20 per cent fine for maintaining a slow over-rate in their 66-run defeat to Australia in the ODI series opener in Sydney, on Friday (November 27).

Match Referee David Boon imposed the sanction after Virat Kohli’s side was ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

On-field umpires Rod Tucker and Sam Nogajski, TV umpire Paul Reiffel and fourth umpire Gerard Abood levelled the charge. Kohli pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so no formal hearing was needed.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Riding on the back of contrasting centuries from Aaron Finch and Steve Smith, Australia racked up a total of 374 that India failed to chase in their 50 overs, conceding a 0-1 lead to the hosts.
