Srinagar, Oct 31 (K Pen): In a landmark step towards sustainable urban mobility, the Jammu and Kashmir Government today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) for the development of the Srinagar Water Metro, inspired by the successful Kochi model.
The project aims to revolutionize local transport by introducing a modern water-based transit system along Dal Lake and River Jhelum, enhancing connectivity while reducing vehicular pressure on Srinagar’s congested roads. Officials said the initiative will integrate eco-friendly transport with tourism and urban planning, creating new avenues for livelihood and environmental conservation.
Speaking on the occasion, officials emphasized that the Srinagar Water Metro will not only offer residents and visitors a scenic, efficient mode of transport but also stand as a model of sustainable, low-emission urban mobility.
Meanwhile, a similar water transport project is being planned for Jammu, with Akhnoor and Reasi identified as key locations for development under the first phase.
