J&K shiver as temperatures plunge; Ladakh reels under extreme cold
Cold wave conditions tightened grip across Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday as most parts of the Union Territory recorded low temperatures, with Kashmir Valley witnessing widespread sub-zero night temperatures, while Ladakh continued to reel under extreme cold.
According to the Meteorological Department, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius, while Qazigund settled at minus 5.8 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam registered a low of minus 7.6 degrees Celsius and Gulmarg recorded minus 6.2 degrees Celsius. Kupwara and Kukernag recorded minus 5.6 degrees Celsius and minus 3.4 degrees Celsius respectively. No significant rainfall or snowfall was reported from anywhere in the Valley.
In the Jammu division, Jammu city recorded a minimum temperature of 4.0 degrees Celsius, while Banihal settled at 7.1 degrees Celsius. Batote recorded 3.0 degrees Celsius and Katra registered a low of 4.4 degrees Celsius. Bhadarwah was the coldest place in the division, recording a sub-zero temperature of minus 2.0 degrees Celsius, while Kathua recorded 4.2 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, Ladakh continued to reel under extreme cold conditions. Drass, often referred to as one of the coldest inhabited places in the region, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 24.5 degrees Celsius. Padum registered minus 18.3 degrees Celsius, while Hanle dipped to minus 16.3 degrees Celsius. Leh recorded a minimum of minus 13.4 degrees Celsius, while Kargil settled at minus 12.3 degrees Celsius.
The MeT department has forecast dry weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir for the next few days, even as cold wave conditions are likely to persist in several areas.
