J&K Water Sports Kayaking and Canoeing Association Holds General Body Meeting, Conducts Elections

The Jammu and Kashmir Water Sports Kayaking and Canoeing Association, affiliated with the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA), convened its General Body Meeting and conducted elections for office bearers on 22 December 2025 at Hotel Comrade Inn, Rajbagh.

The election process was held under the supervision of Justice (Retd.) Parvaiz Hussain Kachroo, former District & Sessions Judge, who served as the Returning Officer. Mr. Fayaz Ahmad Sofi, representing the Jammu and Kashmir Olympic Association and Mr. Prashant Raghuvanshi, Joint Secretary, IKCA, acted as Observers. The elections were conducted under the overall supervision of the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association.

The elections were conducted in a cordial, transparent and peaceful atmosphere. Upon completion of the process, the Returning Officer and Observers congratulated the newly elected office bearers and appreciated the smooth, fair and democratic conduct of the elections.

Mr. Shafqat Watali was re-elected as President of the Association. The newly elected Senior Vice Presidents and Joint Secretaries were also congratulated and extended best wishes for their tenure, with the expectation that they will work collectively for the promotion and development of kayaking and canoeing in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice (Retd.) Parvaiz Hussain Kachroo stated, “The elections were conducted in a disciplined and transparent manner, reflecting a healthy democratic culture within the Association.” Observer Mr. Fayaz Ahmad Sofi remarked, “The smooth conduct of these elections sets a positive benchmark for sports bodies in the region and strengthens institutional governance.” Mr. Prashant Raghuvanshi, Joint Secretary, IKCA, expressed satisfaction over the process and said, “IKCA is pleased with the conduct of the elections and remains committed to supporting the growth of kayaking and canoeing in Jammu and Kashmir.” Renowned water sports athlete Ms. Bilquis Mir congratulated the elected body and noted that “the Association, under the leadership of Mr. Shaafqat Watali, has consistently worked towards nurturing talent and enhancing the profile of water sports in the region.”

After assuming charge, Mr. Shafqat Watali expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and stated that the Association would continue to focus on grassroots development, athlete welfare and increased national and international participation. Dr. Burhan Bazaz, was inducted as the Special Guest, addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of strong sports institutions in youth development and the promotion of a vibrant sports culture in Jammu and Kashmir.
