Jammu and Kashmir Innovative Foundation For Transforming Society (JKIFTS) organized a webinar on Online Education.
The webinar was conducted by Columnists Council of JKIFTS as a part of one of its core initiatives.
Talking to Kashmir Pen Director JKIFTS, Dr Tasaduk Hussain Itoo said “Online education has seen a significant growth in recent times primarily because of technological advancement and digital revolution. Education has almost entirely shifted to online mode during today’s era but we could see it poses a lot of challenges before an educator as well as a learner.”
The webinar was hosted by Advocate Syed Mujtaba, one of the core executive members of the council. Three of the members of council – Azad Hussain, Advocate Malik Aamir and Syed Mohsin Attiq, delivered their presentations encompassing various aspects of online education with special emphasizes on educational challenges posed during Covid-19 pandemic. Some key points derived from the presentations of the three speakers include:
Topic 1 : Covid-19 and online education in emergency settings

1.Online education was initiated during unfavorable circumstances and all of sudden, most of the students and many teachers were unaware about it.
2. Though not very difficult for the students of higher classes, but for lower classes and for the students of rural areas it was challenging to go with the process of online education. The teachers played a vital role to start online education in elementary schools.
3. The concept of online education was taken to compensate the academic losses of students, along with ensuring social distancing.
4. There were various difficulties faced by teachers while giving online teaching with low speed 2g internet.
5. The non-cooperative approach of parents created various hardships during online teaching.
6. No doubt, both online education and actual class room teaching have their own advantages and disadvantages. But during unfavorable circumstances, online education is not as good as actual classroom teaching.
Topic 2 : Inclusive Education: Opportunities and Challenges

1. We must introspect the society first to fix the problem that specially abled students do encounter with.Parent, Government and community support is must to uphold Inclusive Education.
2. Since attitude of parents is one of the basic challenges that hampers their diabled wards in receiving education, hence we need to approach that very attitude of parents. Parents do feel if their ward gets enrolled in any school then it would be burden on them to pay the fee and other charges. Hence being socially connected it is our duty to help them out.
3. Helping mainstream schools to overcome the barriers. So that they can meet the need of all students.
4. Teachers must pay equal attention to extract hidden talent in specially abled students and to promote them in specific field they are interested in.
5. Infrastructure should be very friendly so that everyone irrespective of any background gets full access to impart education or to explore other services.
Topic 3 : Covid and its implications for protecting children online

1. The immoral and unethical use of online educational apps has to be neutralized by taking parent community into confidence.
2. Teachers need to be well equipped with technical know how of apps, so that they can engage more more effectively with their students.
3. The district education apparatus particularly CEO offices should monitor and plug the loophooles of online education at grossroot level.
4. There is urgent need to redress concerns of disadvantageous sections of society, who can’t afford cell phones.
