J&K’s Female Athletes Make History at National Sports League

Srinagar, Jan 12: Female athletes from Jammu and Kashmir have created history with their first-ever participation at the Khelo India Asmita Women’s League, marking a major milestone for women’s sports in the Union Territory.

A women’s cycling team from District Baramulla delivered impressive performances at the national-level event held in Kurukshetra, Haryana. Cyclists Ulfat Mushtaq, Mehak Mushtaq, Sofia Hilal, Sobiya Manzoor, and Hoor-i-ein Lone showcased determination and skill against top competitors from across the country.

Ulfat Mushtaq finished 10th in the 30 km Time Trial and 11th in the 60 km Mass Start, while Mehak Mushtaq secured 12th place in the Time Trial and 13th in the Mass Start despite suffering a crash. Sofia Hilal and Sobiya Manzoor stood out with 7th and 8th positions, respectively, and Hoor-i-ein Lone finished 16th.

Sports officials termed the achievement a historic moment, highlighting the growing opportunities and support for women athletes in J&K. The administration has reiterated its commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure and providing greater platforms for athletes to compete at national and international levels.
