SRINAGAR 3 Jun : Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi is emerging as a strong contender for a potential India call-up as selectors are expected to take a final decision within the next 48 hours on Mohammed Siraj’s availability for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh.

Auqib Nabi is being considered as a standby option should Mohammed Siraj be rested due to workload management concerns following a demanding IPL 2026 campaign.

Siraj played all 17 matches for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026. He ended the season with 19 wickets at an average of 29.57 and an economy rate of 9.06, prompting discussions over player workload ahead of the closely scheduled red-ball fixture after the IPL.

In contrast, Auqib Nabi has strengthened his case through an impressive domestic season. The Jammu and Kashmir pacer took 60 wickets in the Ranji Trophy and played a key role in his team’s title-winning campaign, highlighting his consistency and effectiveness in the longer format.

His performances have brought him firmly into the selectors’ consideration as India aim to balance fast-bowling workloads and expand their pace options.

If Siraj is eventually rested, Punjab Kings fast bowler Gurnoor Brar is also being looked at and could be in contention for a potential Test debut.

A source quoted by news agency said Siraj has had a demanding season, adding that there is a “strong possibility” of Nabi being included in the squad if changes are made.

Auqib Nabi, born on November 4, 1996 in Sheeri, Baramulla, is an Indian domestic cricketer and pace-bowling all-rounder. Renowned for his accuracy and ability to move the ball, he finished as the leading wicket-taker and was named Player of the Tournament during Jammu and Kashmir’s maiden Ranji Trophy title triumph. His standout performances also earned him a Rs 8.40 crore contract with the Delhi Capitals. ( TOI )
