Srinagar, July 16: Celebrated Kashmiri filmmaker Bilal A Jan’s latest documentary, “J.L. Kaul: A Man of Action,” has been officially selected for the 16th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) 2024. The film will be featured in the Short Documentary Focus section of the prestigious festival, scheduled to take place from July 26 to July 31 in Kerala.
The 30-minute documentary chronicles the remarkable life and contributions of Jawahar Lal Kaul, a renowned social worker and recipient of the Padma Shri. Visually impaired since childhood, Kaul overcame immense personal and social challenges to become a beacon of hope for the visually impaired community in India. He is the founder of the All India Conference of the Blind, a pioneering NGO committed to the rehabilitation and empowerment of the blind.
The film sheds light on Kaul’s inspiring journey, resilience, and social impact, offering audiences an intimate look at the man behind the movement.
This is not Bilal A Jan’s first recognition at IDSFFK. His documentary “Daughters of Paradise” was selected for the competition section at the 11th edition of the festival in 2018. Earlier, his acclaimed film “The Lost Childhood” (in Kashmiri) was screened in the competition sections of both the Tehran International Short Film Festival and the 10th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) in 2008. The film also earned him the Nina Sugati SR Award for Best Director in conceptual art in cinema in 2010.
Bilal A Jan has previously collaborated with iconic filmmakers Shyam Benegal and Vidhu Vinod Chopra on projects such as Mission Kashmir, Netaji, and The Forgotten Hero.
