Nestled amidst the enchanting valleys of Kashmir, a land of breathtaking beauty and rich cultural heritage, Ustaad Waheed Jeelani has emerged as a beacon of hope for the region’s musical traditions. A celebrated vocalist, music composer, and cultural activist, Jeelani’s journey is one of relentless passion and dedication to preserving and promoting the cultural essence of Jammu and Kashmir through his melodious compositions.

A Journey Rooted in Passion

Born in Srinagar City and raised in a serene village near the revered Shrine of Alamdar-i-Kashmir Shaikh Noor Din Noorani, Waheed Jeelani’s connection to music was nurtured by the soothing symphonies of his surroundings and the melodious voice of his mother. “Growing up in Kashmir, I was surrounded by the beauty of nature and the rich musical traditions of our region. It ignited a passion within me to delve deeper into our cultural heritage and share it with the world,” Jeelani reflects.

His early exposure to music blossomed into a profound interest in the late 1980s, supported by a family deeply appreciative of artistic expression. After receiving his initial training in Kashmir, Jeelani moved to Mumbai to further hone his craft. While there, he collaborated with renowned Bollywood singers like Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Usha Mangeshkar, and Chandani Mukherjee. However, familial commitments led him back to Kashmir, where he pursued his artistic ambitions with renewed vigor.

Radio Kashmir: A Launchpad for Greatness

Upon his return, Jeelani approached Radio Kashmir (now Akashvani Kashmir), where his talent blossomed under the guidance of seasoned mentors. At just 19, he recorded his first song, which marked the beginning of a lifelong journey in music. By 1993, Jeelani achieved a milestone when his recordings were sent to New Delhi for evaluation. What followed was historic — instead of being upgraded to B High as anticipated, Jeelani was recognized as an A-Grade singer, an honor unprecedented at the time.

In 1995, Jeelani was approved as a music composer by New Delhi, further cementing his place as a rising star.

Recognition and Accolades

Jeelani’s contributions to music have earned him widespread acclaim both nationally and internationally. His first international performance in London in 2004 marked the beginning of a global journey. Subsequently, he performed in 14 countries, earning accolades such as the “Artist of the Millennium” award in London. In 2012, he became the youngest artist to receive the prestigious A-Top Grade certification for Kashmiri Light Music, an achievement that made him a member of the National Music Audition Board, representing North India.

His collaborations extend beyond borders, exemplified by his 2009 duet with American singer Tera Naomi for a climate change awareness campaign. The English-Kashmiri song resonated deeply with the younger generation and showcased his ability to use music as a medium for social change.

A Champion for Kashmiri Culture

Jeelani’s influence extends beyond the stage. As the founder and chairman of the Kashmir Music Academy, he has dedicated himself to preserving the cultural heritage of Kashmir while nurturing young talent. “Through the Kashmir Music Academy, we aim to provide a nurturing environment for young musicians to learn, grow, and express themselves. It is vital to preserve our cultural heritage and pass it on to future generations,” he emphasizes.

The academy collaborates with professional singers and musicians from across the country to provide students with world-class training. Additionally, Jeelani has been instrumental in creating opportunities for elderly artists, advocating for financial support for those unable to perform.

One of his most notable initiatives is the annual Shashrang festival, which celebrates Kashmiri art and culture. The festival has grown steadily in impact, with plans to expand into an international event, inviting artists from India and abroad to participate.

Innovating During Adversity

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jeelani launched an online initiative titled Qaraar to connect artists worldwide. This virtual platform hosted concerts featuring young and budding artists from Kashmir, ensuring the continuity of cultural expression even during challenging times.

Another groundbreaking project spearheaded by Jeelani is the anthem Wattan, which beautifully encapsulates the essence of Kashmir’s cultural heritage. Featuring over 150 artists, intellectuals, and notable personalities, the song highlights the region’s music and dance traditions, offering an audio-visual feast for audiences. Shot at various scenic locations in Kashmir, Wattan not only celebrates the region’s artistic richness but also promotes tourism with its English-translated lyrics.

A Life Dedicated to Service

Beyond music, Jeelani has used his platform to give back to the community. He has raised funds for underprivileged children, orphans, and struggling institutions. His philanthropic endeavors have touched countless lives, reflecting his deep commitment to social responsibility.

Jeelani’s recognition extends to several prestigious awards, including the National Fellowship Award from the Ministry of Culture and the Jammu and Kashmir State Award. These accolades are a testament to his unwavering dedication to the arts.

Bridging Cultures Through Music

“Music has the incredible ability to transcend borders and connect people on a deep, emotional level,” Jeelani asserts. His career exemplifies this belief, as he continues to captivate audiences with his soul-stirring performances and foster connections across cultures.

By merging traditional Kashmiri music with contemporary themes, Jeelani has struck a delicate balance between preserving the past and embracing the future. His journey from a young boy inspired by his mother’s melodies to a cultural ambassador for Kashmir is nothing short of inspirational.

The Road Ahead

With plans to organize an international cultural festival and further initiatives to support artists and preserve Kashmiri traditions, Jeelani’s vision for the future is as ambitious as it is inspiring. Through his work, he ensures that the melodies of Kashmir will continue to resonate across the globe, bridging hearts and minds through the universal language of music.

As Ustaad Waheed Jeelani continues his remarkable journey, his legacy as a custodian of Kashmiri culture and a beacon of hope for future generations remains steadfast. His story is a testament to the power of music to unite, inspire, and heal—a legacy that will echo in the valleys of Kashmir and beyond for years to come.
