A shutdown was observed in Ladakh to mourn the death of Sonam Dawa Lonpo, chief executive councilor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh.
Dr Lonpo was 71 years old. The bandh was called by the Ladakh Buddhist Association and supported by traders associations.
The district administration had requested the state to declare Wednesday as a public holiday as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
All scheduled activities and programs in the entire region has been either postponed or cancelled while several organisations have organised prayers at monasteries and temples.
Bharatiya Janta Party, district Congress committee, government departments and various social and religious organisations have organised condolence meeting at their respective offices.
A candle light march had been planned in the evening in Leh.
