Srinagar, Jan 6 : A massive fire broke out on Tuesday engulfing a junkyard and adjoining carpet and commercial units in the Tengpora area of Central Kashmir’s Srinagar district.
Officials told news agency Kashmir News Corner (KNC) that the blaze erupted at a junkyard where scrapped vehicles and other discarded material were stored. The fire involved highly inflammable items including foam, thinner, and material from a paint unit, and quickly spread to nearby commercial structures.
The blaze intensified rapidly, engulfing heaps of scrap and commercial material and sending thick plumes of smoke into the air. Several adjoining structures were also affected by the fire.
Soon after the incident was reported, multiple fire tenders were rushed to the spot and firefighting operations were launched to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby residential areas. However, due to the intensity of the fire, flames spread to additional commercial buildings. Firefighting operations were ongoing, with senior Fire and Emergency Services officials present at the site to supervise the operation.
Police and other emergency teams also reached the area to assist in crowd management and regulate traffic movement.
An senior official from fire and emergency service told KNC that “the operation is still ongoing and we are trying our best to contain the fire, it may take few more hours to get situation properly under control.”
Meanwhile, during the firefighting operation, two firefighters sustained injuries in the line of duty. One injured firefighter, Fayaz Ahmad (FM 2423) of Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) Veer, was shifted to JVC Bemina for treatment, while another, Mohd Imran (FM 2175) of F&ES Rangreth, was taken to Bone and Joint Hospital, Barzulla.
No loss of life has been reported so far, though the extent of property damage is being assessed. The cause of the fire was not immediately known and will be ascertained after the blaze is fully doused, officials said. (KNC)
