Municipal Council Kulgam fined a sum of 2500 from the violators during the day who were found throwing municipal waste on the roads.

An official said, most of these penalized people were business establishments who, instead of giving the waste to Municipal Council Kulgam (KMC), were throwing it on the road, and water bodies despite being warned several times.

Mohammad Irfan, the Municipal Executive Officer said, throwing waste on roads and water bodies will cost traders and residents dearly.

“A special roadside waste control campaign is underway in all 13 wards. A team of Kulgam MC including supervisors are part of the drive and will act against the litterbugs. The teams have been constituted to carry out inspections, even during the evening, in different streets, roads and commercial establishments,” he said.

These are bulk waste generators and penalties will be levied against offenders. Teams have been directed to impose fines on them under the Solid Waste Management (SWM) rules 2016, official said.

“The Council has ten door-to-door collection hopper vehicles serving all 13 wards. In addition, 24 tricycles are being procured, which will be used in small streets and alleys for door-to-door collection,” he said.

MC Kulgam also requests that people put the waste in a segregated form in the designated collection hoppers and desist from throwing it in open spaces, streets, and rivers.
