Srinagar, Aug 20: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said meat sold in Srinagar will soon carry a “market-authorised stamp” to ensure quality and hygiene, as the long-pending Rs 31-crore modern abattoir project was revived by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC).

The facility, expected to be completed within one-and-a-half years, will enable disease testing of sheep and provide halal certification before meat reaches the consumer, CM Omar told reporters as per news agency .

“Whenever meat is sold in Srinagar, it should carry a market-authorised stamp so that people know it meets quality standards,” the Chief Minister said, underscoring the need for stringent hygiene protocols in the meat supply chain.

The abattoir project, which had remained stalled for years, is now being fast-tracked by the SMC and will modernise meat processing and testing facilities in the valley, officials said.

When asked about the diplomatic row over Pakistan summoning a US diplomat following his meeting with the American envoy, CM Omar declined to comment, saying the matter was “between Pakistan and the United States.”

“I have nothing to say on that,” he said.

The Chief Minister also refused to engage in a “war of words” with the Congress party over its remarks on the issue, stating that every political party was entitled to its own viewpoint.
